Dance
When you think about dance you think about moving your body and working up a sweat. Actually that’s basically what dance really is, but there’s more than one type of dance. In our world today you will notice that we all do not dance the same way or have the same rhythm, and that’s what makes dancing unique. Dance is also known as a form of non-verbal communication, meaning that you don’t have to use any words to show how you’re feeling; your movements will describe it all. Today dance is a common term to all of us and to some it’s a big word because it means a hobby or a dream come true. In the following paragraphs I will be talking about hip hop, disco, ballet, jazz, and tap, which are all forms of dance.
A common dance that is known by many and comes from France and Russia is ballet. Ballet is a form of dance that is usually performed in concerts, plays, or maybe just for fun. There are professional ballet dancers all over the world. In many states around the world ballet is offered as a class that teaches you the basic steps of the dance, and some places even have classes where you can advance your level of dance. There are classes offered in San Francisco, the Pacific Northwest, and even in Georgia. There are also many types of ballet including classical, contemporary, and neoclassical. Each one of these has their own effect on the human life of the ones that are interested in ballet.
Jazz is another type of dancing that is old and very smooth. When most people thing of jazz they think of music, but it’s more to it than that. Jazz is an original African- American legacy from way back in the early 1900’s. The most popular type of jazz dancing is known as swing, which is usually done by couples but it can also be done alone. Today there are many jazz clubs around the world where you can go and see the people enjoying the dance and having a good time. There’s a big jazz club in New York known as the Blue Note, this is a great attraction for jazz dancing lovers. As like ballet, jazz classes are offered all over the world today for all ages and race who wants to learn the dance. In Chicago you can find many schools with this opportunity.
Tap is another form of dance that began in the 19th century. Tap dance is a method of using a special kind of shoe that makes loud noises that sound as if someone is tapping on something. This dance was performed mostly on street sides for money and to entertain people. In big cities such as New York and New Jersey you could find many tap dancers dancing, and many were even being paid by the watchers. Tap isn’t still around as it was years ago when it was first originated. Older generations, still consider this as one of the best dance movements in their time.
Disco dancing is also a well known dance. Disco was and still may be a dance that you would see being done in clubs, at concerts, or parties. It wasn’t only a dance but also a style that people adapted to. When you would think of disco you would think of the big afros, colorful clothes, and big platform shoes. These were all of the accessories that people wore when doing the disco, as it was called. The dance was done to energizing music, at disco parties that had spinning disco balls and colorful lights during the. Disco dancing has been a part of the dance scene since the early 1970’s.
Then there’s the most common dance that’s known by many of us today as hip- hop. Hip hop was first introduced to the world in New York in the early 1970’s. The dance is very popular today by many people and cultures around the world. It’s a dance of rhythm and beat. There are many different types of movements being introduced to us through hip-hop everyday. Even though hip-hop is a big dance, it’s also disliked by many because of the music that most of the movements are done to. In today’s world that music is known as R & B and Rap, along with the music comes many of the dances. Some of the most popular dances today are known as the Soulja Boy, and Walk It Out, and these are just a few to be named. It has put a spot in the world where it will never be forgotten. As with many of the other dances, hip-hop dance classes are available in many places.
So when you think of dance you can think of more than one type, because there are many styles and different types of music that people dance a certain way to. When you break them all down, you will see that none of them are alike in any way or form. The good thing about dance is that it’s some type for us all no matter what we may like from ballet, to jazz, to tap, to disco, all the way to hip hop. All of these dance methods haven’t just appeared today, but have been here for quite some time, some even centuries or more. Dance is one concept in the world that will never die.

American Romanticism

Romanticism
1. In the story Rip Van Winkle there were many romantic points that you could have caught hold of, but I have chosen the time of when Rip Van Winkle was on Catskill Mountain where he and his dog Wolf sat in the woods and relaxed. Here’s a quote from the passage “He would sometimes sit himself at the foot of a tree, and share the contents of his wallet with Wolf, with whom he sympathized as a fellow- sufferer in persecution.” Rip Van Winkle felt that his wife didn’t understand him or appreciate him so he had to find a way of escaping. I choose this as an example because it was a way for him to escape what he thought was nonsense into a world of peace. Even though this wasn’t true to him and Wolf it was.
Another point of romantic that I chose from the story was when Rip Van Winkle awoke from his dreams to find that his dog and gun was gone. Here’s some direct evidence “On waking, he found himself on the green knoll whence he had first seen the old man of the glen.” Before he went into a deep sleep he was with an old man that was calling his name through the woods, upon awaking the old man as well as his belongings were gone. The night before they had a run-in with nine pins who were a dangerous group of people. So in my thought, they took his dog and his gun and the old man was involved with them. I chose this as another example because he thought that by him being away in the mountains he could gain some relaxation when really he was tricked into a spell.

2. In the poem “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant he talks about death. I think that the poem is saying when it seems close to a death there's no need to be afraid because its going to b a happy time. It talks about how everything will look and to live your life while you’re here. This shows romanticism in the poem because no one has actually died these are just the things that he’s talking about out of nature, that he can imagine on how everything will look. It has a big focus on the thing that he believes nature is teaching us before we die. It's showing how a grave would look, or how the world will be.
3. The point of “Ropewalk” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is talking about a lot of different scenes being seen through someone’s point of view. He’s working in a factory and he's going round and round viewing people's lifes of every kind from a girl poised, to a school boy with a kite. While reading the poem, in my mind I could imagine the girl being poised in the air as if she’s a model, I could also see the two maids’ hands clasping grass. This is a good example of romanticism because these are all things that he’s seeing in his mind but they’re not happening in actuality.
4. I chose this picture as an example of romanticism because it’s showing a view of a beautiful sky and people thinking and working. This could be romanticism because the person could be imagining they were in the photo doing the same things.

The Puritans and The Rationalists
The Puritan’s
1. The Puritan’s truly believed that we were all born sinners and God had a chosen few who weren’t. They were better known as Pilgrim’s, and as we know they always dressed in black so what would this make them. They also had a strong believe that God was just holding on to us and would drop us in the pit of hell at anytime. I didn’t strongly agree with the belief of The Puritan’s because it seems as if they’d forgotten that they were wrong doers also, and shouldn’t judge the world. Their most not believable opinion was that God didn’t die for us all. The Puritans are some very unthankful people.
2. In the Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God, the Puritans had beliefs that we were all sinners in some way. In the movie at the beginning there were quotes about how God had chosen one’s of us who would be safe. They felt as if we didn’t have any good in us. I feel that these people are the real sinners who are looking down on us. The Puritan’s are the ones who should go to hell.
Then there were the ministers who preached about all of our sins and told stories of us going to hell. In the movie the minister talked about us being wrath, and that God would drop us into hell in any minute. I didn’t like this about t hem because they should be teaching the people good things and not bad. They lived life’s that were not suitable for anyone to live, but yet they judged others. The Puritan’s were big fakes in my opinion.
Since they always talked about we were chosen, in the Plymouth Plantation tells the Governor died of an unknown reason. It speaks of him complaining about his head the few days before he died, but the point is he just got sick and died. With that happening I think that The Puritan’s way of believing in things was not true and they should think of their way of living. To the Puritans with the Governor dying, he may had did something wrong to cause him a sin so God was punishing him by taking his life. In the paragraph that I read, it told that the Governor’s death caused a big pain in many of the people’s life, but the Puritans thought that God just chose him to be the next thrown into the pit of hell.
Shortly after the death of the Governor his wife died, because she was weak and couldn’t take his leaving her. The Puritan’s lifestyle may have had everyone thinking that when we died it was because we were being punished because we were sinners. I don’t like any of the signs that the Puritans put out to others. They felt as if they were left here to remind us all of our sins. The Puritans were the number one sinners in my point of view.
3. Total Depravity in the Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God is said that through Adam and Eve we all fall sinners. Meaning that because of their sins we suffer from them also. This is the concept of an Original Sin. Since this is the original sin for all humans, we all must pay for it. The Puritans didn’t think that we were perfect in any way.
In the movie, Jonathan Edwards quotes “we are all sinners, being held over the pit of hell by god, and can be dropped at any time. “ We can all be dropped into hell at anytime because of the sin that Adam and Eve committed and therefore we have to pay for that also. With him stating his quote it seems as if he’s saying that we’re all going to hell. Total depravity is affecting us all.
Unconditional Election is saying that God “saves” those he wishes- only a few are selected for salvation. This is an example in William Bradford’s Plymouth Plantation. This is a meaning that’s saying God only chose a few of us to be saved and the rest of us are sinners. In this belief not all of us are going to go to heaven but rather hell. This was strongly believed by the Puritans.
In a part of the Plymouth Plantation that I read, I found an example of unconditional election. This is what was said “Governor Mr. John Carver, who was working out in a field when he became sick, he complained greatly of his head hurting and he lay down and within a few hours he was dead.” In this example it would mean that he wasn’t one of God’s chosen few for salvation, but maybe he did something wrong to be a sinner and he died. Even though this isn’t a proven fact, this is what the Puritan’s would have believed. Just because the Governor died he wasn’t one of the perfect one’s that was saved.
The Rationalists
1. The Puritans and the Rationalists were different in many different ways. The Puritans believed that God didn’t die for all of us, but only for a chosen few and the rest of us were sinners because of Adam and Eve. When on the other hand the rationalists didn’t see life this way, they felt that life was run by natural laws and we all had to make the best out of our lives. The rationalists believed that anything was possible through science and everything wasn’t to be done by God. The Puritans didn’t believe this, they thought that humans shouldn’t do anything because we were already sinners and that would be interfering with God’s work. There was a big difference between the two.
a. An example of the differences between the Puritans and the Rationalists today, is abortion. Today if you were to have an abortion the Puritans would believe that it was God’s will for you to get rid of the baby, maybe because you did something wrong and you don’t need a baby. Where on the Rationalists side of view they would believe that a woman has the right to do whatever she pleases with her body and there are tests in science that can get rid of the baby before it’s too big.
2. Benjamin Franklin felt that he was arriving at Moral Perfection this is a good idea of a rationalist. In the text it read that “I wished to live without committing any fault at any time; I would conquer all that either natural inclination, custom, or company might lead me into.” This was showing a way of being a rationalist because he knew that he had to come up with a plan to reach this moral perfection and that he couldn’t let anything stop him.
Moral Perfection
1. Mind. Never loose your way, always stay focused
2. Spirit. Have high hopes and goals
3. Attitude. Learn to watch your tone of voice and words
4. Stride. Keep your head held high
5. Perfection. We all make mistakes, don’t give up
6. Accomplish. You can always reach your goals
7. Pride. Love yourself and your ways
8. Silence. Don’t let your words hurt others
9. Believe. Never tell yourself you can’t
10. Time. Lose no time for any reason
11. Pursue. Lead yourself to do good things
12. Challenge. Try harder things to achieve
13. Achieve. Complete everything you want in life
I feel that if I tried to do all of these things it would be possible to reach moral perfection. We all can change some things in our lives in some way or another, but the goal is to try. If you feel that you want to reach moral perfection you can’t start halfway and give up along the way. It’s not always easy to set new goals in our life’s to accomplish but we have to try. I know that if I worked really hard on al of these virtues that I came up with I would get them done.
