1. “A Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin
a. Mrs. Mallard had heart problems so they feared telling her that her husband, Brently Mallard had died in an accident. At first she appeared upset but once in her room those appearances changed. “When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!" In her mind she was free from her husband and she was over excited. She felt that with her husband dead she had no more worries. “There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself.”
b. Chopin wants to solve the way that the lady feels. She wants the lady husband to be dead so that the lady can be set free and happy in every way. So in the story she shows the way the lady would feel if her husband died. In the end she finds out that he’s really not dead and all of her excitement goes away. “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-- of joy that kills.”
2. “The Battle With Mr. Covey” by Fredrick Douglass
a. The slave was tired of being whipped by Mr. Covey, so he took matters into his own hands. One day he became ill while working but Mr. Covey didn’t understand, “He then gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up. I tried to do so, but fell back in the attempt. He gave me another kick, and again told me to rise. I again tried, and succeeded in gaining my feet: but, stopping to get the tub with which I was feeding the fan, I again staggered and fell.” After the boy gained his composure he left, once he did return he had the strength to fight back. He was advised by a friend tom carry a piece of a root that would never allow Mr. Covey to touch him ever again. “I at length took the root, and, according to his direction, carried it upon my right side.”
b. A social issue that was trying to be solved in this story was between blacks and whites. The author wanted to find a way for the white man to have mercy on the black man in some way. I think that’s why he found a way for the boy to find something that would give him the strength to fight back, and that he did. Once the black boy fought Mr. Covey back he never again tried to whip him. This was a good way to solve the issue.
c. I think that Fredrick Douglass’s purpose for writing this was to show the way that slaves were treated by their masters’. In the story it showed that the slaves had no life of their own unless it was with the white man. I think that Douglass was trying to show that you can’t always rule everyone and think that they won’t get tired of your behavior. During the setting of the story it was obvious slavery time, and this black boy was being whipped all the time. Douglass was showing that it wasn’t right, so the boy found a way to defend himself.
3. I chose this poem as realism because it talks about the way that heaven is. Even though the author has never seen heaven before, this is the way she sees it, and wants you to see it. For example, “Heaven, the weathers always warm and mild.” We don’t truly know that this is true but this is a great way to see it.

Little Black Girl Lost 2
This story focused on a 15 year old girl named Johnnie Wise. Johnnie' s a good girl, who loves to go to church and school, at least that's who she was until her mother ruins her life. On Christmas Eve, Johnnie's mother, Martha, sold her daughter's body to the insurance man Earl Sherman for money and food, and never once asked her how she felt. After this day Johnnie life would be ruined forever. When she went to school she was picked on, being called trash like her mother and many other rude names. Over time Johnnie believed these names and started to fall into her mother footsteps sleeping with men for money.
'Til Its Gone
As time passes Danita and Stephen just can't seem to work things out, because of the one accident they had. Danita starts a new job at a law firm and before long things in her life starts to change, including her love interest in Stephen. On the low Danita's having an affair with one of the lawyers in the firm and starts to forget all about Stephen, but he's not forgetting her. One day Stephen comes home and catches Danita with the lawyer, and a huge fight breaks out. This becomes the end of Danita and Stephen's relationship, and never again will she hear from him, that is until she's dying.
'Til Its Gone
This story is about a girl named Danita who has been in and out of relationships but can nevr seem to find the right guy. So her friend, Latrice, sets her up on a blind date with her co-worker, Stephen. Danita and Stephen makes instant coonections because they're alike in more ways than one. As time goes by their relationship begans to strengthens and they move in together. Before you know it they've been together for 5 years, with no major issues or concerns. That is til Danita finds a condom in Stephens pocket. He swears to her that its not his, can you believe that he's actually telling the truth, its his friend's Jeff. But Danita's not going for that story.
Dark Romanticism
1. I’m closer to being a Transcendentalism because I believe that God has his own way of speaking to us through nature. He shows us different menaing of things with the sun, stars, rain, or even wind. Not only these things but he speaks to us through our mind and spirit. I also feel that we are our strongest power not the government because we can do whatever they can. A transcendentalism believed that we thought through God and so do I.
2. I just read “Black Cat” by Edgar Allen Poe. I enjoyed this short story it was about a black cat and its owner and the things your mind can trick you into doing. The main character was addicted to animals every since he was young, and once he was older he and his wife owned a pet of all sorts. He had a special pick out of the animals, which was a black cat named Pluto. “Pluto -- this was the cat's name -- was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets.” The man loved and cared for this cat very much, until one day a sense of evil came over him. As said by his wife”black cats were witches in disguise.”
The man became a alcholic and murdered the cat. “I took from my waistcoat-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket ! I blush, I burn, I shudder, while I pen the damnable atrocity.” This is a example of Dark Romanticism, because evil had built up inside of the man for no apparent reason. In my opinion, I also thought that he was insane, but to a transcendentalism no human would do this because we were all pure. This man showed a different belief, which would fit into Dark Romanticism, who knew that all humans had some evil in them because of the original sin.
3. “The Raven” also by Edgar Allen Poe was written while his wife was dying. The poem is focused on a raven, a stranger tapping at the author’s chamber door. He says he’s sitting trying to nap when there came a tapping and a rapping. It filled him with fear and terror that he never felt before as the wind was blowing and worsening the scene. The only words that were being spoken was ”Lenore!” When he open the chamber door the raven flew in.
I chose to include all of the lines above because they stuck out to me the most in the poem. They stuck out because the man is in another room writing a poem while is wife is in another one dying. Once he hears a noise he become afraid and worried but never before was he concerned. I think that the raven but some fear into his heart, since he wasn’t worried about his wife.
This represents anti- Transcendental because a Transcendetalism wouldn’t have been scared or afraid since they believed that they were pure through God. Speaking against that a Dark Romanticsim believer would’ve believed this was happening because the person was evil or insane, because of Adam and Eve causing us to sin. In their opinion, the raven was taunting the man because he was being evil towards his wife. I felt that he was being unpure because he wasn’t caring about others unil something freightened him.

Transcendentalism
1. In “Nature” by Ralph Waldo Emerson the poem focused on nature it self such as the way that adults see nature. An example “Most persons do not see the sun.” I felt that this was kind of true because many adults and even kids don’t see things of nature as we should. Next I read “Self-Reliance” also by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I enjoyed this poem it explained how a human should be and the way some are. “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace.” This was a quote from what I read; every man on earth should feel this exact way. Then there was “Resistance to Civil Government” by Henry David Thoreau. I didn’t like this short story at all. It talked about the government and the way it should be acted upon. “The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to abused and perverted before the people can act through it.” I don’t feel that the government is equally to anything.
2. “Nature” showed Transcendentalism by showing that nature is in the eye of the people not by what others believe. For instance “One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime.” This could have been told to them through their mind by God, because they believed that God spoke to them through their minds and nature. When they speak of nature they speak of stars, the sun, and the woods and such things. These are all things that come naturally from nature or otherwise from God to communicate with them.
“Self- Reliance” also showed Transcendentalism through the mind and body of a human. It talks about how we should accept all things that come our way because it’s a gift from God. “These are the voices we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world.” In the other religions they would’ve have believed that this was a part of God’s doing and it was wrong. But God encourages us all through his words to do well. The story also talks about us accepting the place that we’ve been put at. These are good examples of Transcendentalism.
“Resistance to Civil Government” was another manner of Transcendentalism. They did not believe that the government was effective, because you could connect with God through nature and through your mind. “It is not a man’s duty, as a matter of course, to devote himself to the eradication of any, even the most enormous wrong; he may still properly have other concerns to engage him; he may still properly have other concerns to engage him; but it is his duty, at least, to wash his hands of it, and, if he gives it no thought longer, not to give it practically his support.” This was an quote saying that it’s a man duty to do what he’s told through God but not by the government, because they don’t need it. The short story focused on how a man can do without the help of a government because we can resist it.
3. In the video this man has left to go into nature for awhile, maybe even consider living outdoors. He’s surrounded by all of the animals of nature. He’s building a cabin and much more so that he can survive. In the film he says”You can’t rush it,’ referring to his new lifestyle of living. He’s actually enjoying living this way and is surviving with nature day by day. He’s eating lake trout and hunting other things. This is a good way of living outdoors.
This is a good way of showing Transcendentalism because the transcendentalist believed in nature and felt that it was a sign to us through many ways. Back in “Nature” it read”the greatest delight the fields and woods minister, is the suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable.” In the film the man is using this quote very wisely; he’s enjoying the fields and woods through every circumstance.

Analytical Writing
Dance
When you think about dance you think about moving your body and working up a sweat. Actually that’s basically what dance really is, but there’s more than one type of dance. In our world today you will notice that we all do not dance the same way or have the same rhythm, and that’s what makes dancing unique. Dance is also known as a form of non-verbal communication, meaning that you don’t have to use any words to show how you’re feeling; your movements will describe it all. Today dance is a common term to all of us and to some it’s a big word because it means a hobby or a dream come true. In the following paragraphs I will be talking about hip hop, disco, ballet, jazz, and tap, which are all forms of dance.
A common dance that is known by many and comes from France and Russia is ballet. Ballet is a form of dance that is usually performed in concerts, plays, or maybe just for fun. There are professional ballet dancers all over the world. In many states around the world ballet is offered as a class that teaches you the basic steps of the dance, and some places even have classes where you can advance your level of dance. There are classes offered in San Francisco, the Pacific Northwest, and even in Georgia. There are also many types of ballet including classical, contemporary, and neoclassical. Each one of these has their own effect on the human life of the ones that are interested in ballet.
Jazz is another type of dancing that is old and very smooth. When most people thing of jazz they think of music, but it’s more to it than that. Jazz is an original African- American legacy from way back in the early 1900’s. The most popular type of jazz dancing is known as swing, which is usually done by couples but it can also be done alone. Today there are many jazz clubs around the world where you can go and see the people enjoying the dance and having a good time. There’s a big jazz club in New York known as the Blue Note, this is a great attraction for jazz dancing lovers. As like ballet, jazz classes are offered all over the world today for all ages and race who wants to learn the dance. In Chicago you can find many schools with this opportunity.
Tap is another form of dance that began in the 19th century. Tap dance is a method of using a special kind of shoe that makes loud noises that sound as if someone is tapping on something. This dance was performed mostly on street sides for money and to entertain people. In big cities such as New York and New Jersey you could find many tap dancers dancing, and many were even being paid by the watchers. Tap isn’t still around as it was years ago when it was first originated. Older generations, still consider this as one of the best dance movements in their time.
Disco dancing is also a well known dance. Disco was and still may be a dance that you would see being done in clubs, at concerts, or parties. It wasn’t only a dance but also a style that people adapted to. When you would think of disco you would think of the big afros, colorful clothes, and big platform shoes. These were all of the accessories that people wore when doing the disco, as it was called. The dance was done to energizing music, at disco parties that had spinning disco balls and colorful lights during the. Disco dancing has been a part of the dance scene since the early 1970’s.
Then there’s the most common dance that’s known by many of us today as hip- hop. Hip hop was first introduced to the world in New York in the early 1970’s. The dance is very popular today by many people and cultures around the world. It’s a dance of rhythm and beat. There are many different types of movements being introduced to us through hip-hop everyday. Even though hip-hop is a big dance, it’s also disliked by many because of the music that most of the movements are done to. In today’s world that music is known as R & B and Rap, along with the music comes many of the dances. Some of the most popular dances today are known as the Soulja Boy, and Walk It Out, and these are just a few to be named. It has put a spot in the world where it will never be forgotten. As with many of the other dances, hip-hop dance classes are available in many places.
